This coming weekend sees the start of Toby Tobias first Australian tour. We here at Fromage HQ have been buzzing about this gig for the last few months as he has definitely been one of my favourite producers for a few years now with quality releases on Rekids, Nang, Tiny Sticks, Hector Works, Under the Shade and more. Not to mention his contribution to the dance music spectrum in the form of his Tracky Bottoms label, which despite only a few releases over nearly four years have always churned out quality.
Tour dates are:
Jan 15 New Guernica, Melbourne
Jan 20 Sugar, Adelaide
Jan 22 Blank Canvas, Civic Underground, Sydney
And now for a little something to get you in the mood. This mix went down a treat in the early hours after a big night on new years, it really is a great mixed bag of tunes from deep house, disco, boogie, deep tech, and whatever else you might want. There really is something for everyone here.
I came across this edit on my travels through Soundcloud the other day and thought it was one of the better ones I have heard for a while. Posted on the Unidisco page, this edit is actually by Jeff Dubois from freezing Minneapolis. Laid back loopy slow mo, with some lovely strings, great vocal sample (anyone able to pick it? I don’t know!), laidback guitar, and lush keys. He had it up for download but the link reached its limit REAL quick. Thankfully he has hosted it elsewhere so everyone can enjoy the goodness. Thanks guys! I guess the cold in Minneapolis gives people reason to sit around in front of their computers without leaving the house, if this is the result then its not a bad thing!
So I just bought my first lot of records in a few months. I guess with playing a lot of your own stuff out, it makes it easy to make the switch to cds but I have been missing the buzz of buying records. I forgot how cool it was until I opened my mail today!
One of the records I bought in particular has had me waiting on the mail man to get here. It’s the new release on Runaway’s OTP Party Breaks, a split release featuring two new edits from Andy Ash on one side and a new edit from Runaway on the other. The pick of the bunch for me is Andy’s rework of De De’s “S&M”, tastefully reworked into a slow jacking party monster. The flip side is pretty good too, with Runaway’s “D-Time”, a typical Runaway edit featuring a dope old school disco break, prominent funk guitar, and a wicked piano line.
I’ve noticed that it seems I am largely blogging either our own music or something new out of Liverpool. I don’t know what’s in the water there but I keep coming across more and more great music from there all the time. Thanks to the wonder of Soundcloud and Facebook us at Fromage have managed to form a few friendships with such artists who we have never met (it’s beautiful this technology thing ain’t it?) Gareth Cheshire is one who has been doing some great work in recent times, and has been receiving heavy support from us over the last few months.
With a debut artist EP – Casual Observations From Afar – coming in the first quarter of 2011 on Audio Parallax Records, we have a feeling his will be a name you will hear a lot more about. My favourite track on the EP has to be Falling From Space, a percussive and melodic journey the makes me want to smile. Not quite sure whether its prog, tech house, house or whatever else, I am sure though that I like it. I love the way he builds the layers of melody and the bass drop behind the lead synth during the breakdown is awesome. Then the cowbell drops, he sure knows how to drive that right into your subconscious!
Also receiving support is Above the Clouds, a real old school feel on this one. Starting out a deep house track with a layers of melody and a catchy piano riff, moving through an epic breakdown with lush pads, more of that damn piano, and then building into an acid stormer!
This track has been getting repeated plays on Soundcloud from me in the last few weeks so I thought it was only fair to share it here for our readers. I’ve been a big fan of Deep Space Orchestra’s stuff for a while now, and with an EP coming up on Toby Tobias reborn Tracky Bottoms label they are sure to make their mark. Word is that Toby Tobias will be turning in a remix of Stolen Future himself and being a big fan of his work I can’t wait to hear what he will do with it!
Here’s a bit about the boys:
Deep Space Orchestra is the recording pseudonym for a long-standing series of collaborations between Chris Barker and Si Murray, who met in 2005 while watching Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit spin at a Body & Soul night. Each release draws inspiration from classic house and techno as well as film soundtracks, sci-fi flicks, video games and a dark sense of humour.
Chris started making beats at the age of 14 with an old Roland drum machine, later graduating to an MPC and an eclectic record collection to plunder. Cutting his teeth as a DJ at Birmingham’s renowned Jigsaw Music and Leftfoot club nights, Chris has been spinning for a number of years playing soul, house, jazz, afrobeat and pretty much anything else, appearing on the bill alongside luminaries such as Masters at Work, Adam Goldstone, Atjazz and Benji B. He is currently resident at Liverpool’s Altiplano night alongside Kelvin Andrews, and has had solo releases on Domu’s sadly now defunct TrebleO records as well as Glasgow’s Five20East.
Si’s musical roots lie in Glasgow, where he promoted and DJed for the Good Vibrations Sound System with a group of like-minded individuals including Graeme Clark (aka The Revenge) and bringing DJs such as Jazzy Jeff and Kenny Dope to the city. This led to an inevitable interest in production, leading to collaborations with Chris and also with The Revenge under the Cronk Family Enterprises moniker. Their single ‘A Quiet Rebellion’ was released on Five20East to a glowing reception, finding its way into the box of Danny Krivit among many others.
The new single is out and available to buy now, available from Junodownload at Fromage Disco – Need Your Love. Now I know I have already raved about these in a previous post, but even if you don’t like the original make sure to check out the remixes, James Johnston and Tal M Klein really outdid themselves here and have provided two very different but equally as good remixes.
Also, just because we love you so much, here’s a link to the radio edit for free!
So thought I should post an update as to our current releases. As I alluded to earlier on this site its a busy month for us with releases.
The brand new Fromage Disco single, Need Your Love is on sale from tomorrow. We are really excited about this release, as not only were we happy with the track we produced, but then we received two stunningly good remixes from Tal M Klein and James Johnston that left our track in the dark. Get on this one guys, have a feeling that the James Johnston remix could be a cracker here in the Aussie summer. Here’s a preview of the EP on Soundcloud
Our remix for Tal M Klein’s “Without Her” is now out on Tal’s Aniligital Music along with a cracking remix from Cosmic Boogie, and others from Hardway Brothers, and DRM. Currently charting fairly well on Juno but can always do with a kick along. You can purchase it from junodownload here: Tal M Klein – Without Her
Last but not least, we have a remix for Aussie dance icons Infusion coming out November 29th, early feedback has been really positive for this remix so feeling really good about things. Very much looking forward to the release. For a preview, you can check it out on our Soundcloud
And more release news, its a busy week in the world of Fromage.
The fantastic So Far Away EP by Dany Dorado is out on Disco Volante today also. Featuring Cyberego, chilled out piece of electronica/nu disco with lots of synth work reminiscent of early italo influences, complete with a Fromage Disco remix.
The EP also features Wayfarer which is an epic nu disco track with a progressive edge, which Havana Candy have turned in a tough and rugged but no less epic remix for.
Featuring tracks from Lightspeed Recordings label honcho Agent 86, Wowlace, DanceCamp and of course Fromage Disco, The new Sound Bites Vol 1 EP arrives with the premise of showcasing tracks The LightSpeed gang find interesting & intriguing, regardless of whether they are intended for the dancefloor or not…That said, feel free to play them on dance floors wherever you may feel inclined.
